Both of the franchise’s restaurants achieved the Seal of Commitment as a promise to keep guests safe

Jacksonville, FL  (RestaurantNews.com)  Grumpy’s Restaurant has been awarded the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association (FRLA) Seal of Commitment – a promise that the establishment has achieved enhanced safety and sanitation standards as designated by FRLA to ensure the safety of guests and employees. The FRLA’s goal is that guests have confidence that our business is sanitary and safe, and staff are well trained when they see an FRLA Seal of Commitment on the door.

“Ensuring that our guests feel comfortable and safe at our restaurants is, and has always been, our top priority,” said Grumpy’s Restaurant President and CEO Daniel DeLeon. “Long before the pandemic, we put many practices in place to keep our guests and staff safe, but now with health at the forefront of everyone’s minds, we are proud to display our Seal of Commitment as reminder of the promise we have made to keep our community healthy.”

The Seal of Commitment has been awarded to the founding location in Orange Park, and its new Middleburg location, which opened in October. For each restaurant to earn the Seal of Commitment, the businesses have dedicated time and invested resources to ensure the establishment, staff, and guests remain safe and healthy by completing management, food safety, and COVID-19 safety and sanitation trainings for all team members.

“FRLA is proud to designate Grumpy’s Restaurant with our Seal of Commitment for their commitment to sanitation excellence,” said Carol Dover, President and CEO of the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association. “Through this achievement, they are demonstrating their serious pledge to ensure the safety and health of their employees and guests, and we commend them.”

Grumpy’s has developed and maintained standard operating procedures with intensive safety and sanitation standards. The franchise takes pride in the fact that each restaurant has bi-monthly health and food safety inspections from a third-party inspection company. All employees are state-certified ServStaff Safe Food Handlers, FRLA COVID-19 Sanitation & Safety certified, and, as always, Grumpy’s brings in a professional cleaning crew to clean and disinfect both restaurants every evening.

All guest entrance handles and high touch areas have been wrapped with Pure Zone Antimicrobial Surface Projection Wrap Film. Every employee goes through the CDC recommended health screening and temperature check prior to each employee shift. They have even extended this to all of their vendors, delivery drivers and maintenance personnel. Frequency of their already stringent cleaning and sanitation procedures in every department of the organization have been increased.

Grumpy's - News4Jax - 5 Jacksonville Brunch Spots Worth Checking Out.JPG

“5 Jacksonville brunch spots worth checking out” featured on News4Jax.com.

Grumpys’s Restaurant is known for the logo of the smile turned upside down chef. Don’t let that image fool you. Walk into any of the three Grumpy’s locations and know you are among friends and family as they love their regulars and welcome newbies alike. They have been voted Jax Best Breakfast, Jax Best Brunch…just Jax Best presented by Visit Jacksonville. The restaurant was originally launched in the 90′s by a U.S. Navy cook, known as Chef Grumpy. Not sure how one can catch that vibe after devouring some of their dishes including the standard pancakes, waffles, eggs, etc. It’s when you do a deep dive and try their creamed chipped beef, cinnamon roll pancakes, and quiche of the day. Nothing says brunch like quiche. The variety they offer with their Eggs benedict will appeal to everyone — even yours truly and I’m not into eggs on that level.

“Grumpy's Restaurant Eyes Three Openings Next Year after Momentous 2020” featured on Franchising.com.

Beloved local diner kickstarted franchise expansion amid pandemic while supporting the community during difficult times

While 2020 has been difficult for businesses all across the country, one local diner has not only been able to remain resilient, but support its local community throughout turbulent times. Grumpy’s Restaurant has been a local staple for over 20 years, but this year has been critical for the diner as it kickstarted its franchise expansion following a largescale community outreach campaign. The restaurant is looking ahead to 2021 to continue to get involved and support residents in Northeast Florida as the brand continues to grow in the area.

Here are some notable moments in Grumpy’s Restaurant’s 2020:

  • President and CEO Daniel DeLeon initially made headlines during the spring as dining rooms were shut down in Florida. He set up an employee relief fund where he forfeited his own salary to continue sending all of his staff home with paychecks.

  • DeLeon then worked with the restaurant’s vendors to set up a produce giveaway event to provide fresh food to local residents who could not afford groceries.

  • Grumpy’s launched its “Buy a Breakfast & Give a Breakfast” campaign that allowed anyone to sponsor a meal, and Grumpy’s matched all donations. Through this campaign, over 1,000 meals have been donated to local healthcare workers, first responders, and less fortunate.

  • Grumpy’s sold its first two franchises in Middleburg and St. Johns, FL.

  • The Middleburg location opened in October after hosting a soft opening charity event, raising over $5,800 for Florida’s First Coast YMCA.

“We have had our ups and downs this year, but we are coming out of 2020 stronger than ever and we are so excited to see what 2021 has in store for us,” says DeLeon. “I am thankful that this year has given us the opportunity to connect with our community in as many ways possible, and has brought us some incredible franchise partners to help continue to grow our brand.”

Looking ahead, Grumpy’s Restaurant’s third location is expected to open in St. Johns in the spring, and DeLeon plans to open two other locations throughout the year. He also plans to sell an additional three franchise units, which would open the following year, all of which are set to be located in Northeast Florida.

DeLeon is hoping to connect with new franchise partners who can carry out Grumpy’s’ mission to support others and create a welcoming, family-focused community. He is looking to expand the diner to areas including Mandarin, Fruit Cove, Ortega, Southside, Wildlight, Yulee, Amelia Island, and St. Augustine.
