Grumpy's Restaurant is setting up shop at The Fountains at St. Johns, with a grand opening date set for Monday, Aug. 16.

ST JOHNS, Fla. — (Note: The video above was originally published in 2019.)

A First Coast restaurant known for its decadent, dessert-style waffles and traditional, hearty diner fare is opening a new location this month in St. Johns County.

Grumpy's Restaurant is setting up shop at The Fountains at St. Johns, with a grand opening date set for Monday, Aug. 16, from 5:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The expansion comes after the restaurant saw success at its original Orange Park location and its first franchised location in Middleburg.

The restaurant will also host two charitable soft opening events on Friday, Aug. 13 and and Saturday, Aug. 14. The invite- and RSVP-only events will allow guests to donate $12 per adult and $6 per child to enjoy their favorite meal and drink, with 100% of the proceeds going to Nease High School and the First Coast YMCA.

The restaurant made headlines during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, when many restaurants were struggling to keep their doors open and staff members paid during to-go only mandates. Founder and CEO Daniel DeLeon donated his own salary in order to keep his workers paid.

The restaurant also donated hundreds of meals to hospital workers, firefighters, police officers and grocery store employees to thank them for their work during COVID-19.

That dedication to serving the community is part of what drew local owners Justin and Leah Milliken to franchise the new St. Johns County location.

“Living in Northeast Florida, we have gotten to know Grumpy’s very well. It’s our family’s favorite restaurant,” Leah Milliken said in a news release. “We love the atmosphere, food, and culture. This is a great opportunity for us to build a local staple in St. Johns County where families and friends can come together over great diner food." The new location will also provide more than 40 jobs to people in the local community, Milliken said.

The Americana diner serves high quality comfort food, Southern hospitality infused breakfast, lunch and brunch with dishes ranging from sandwiches, homemade soups and salads to signature coffee, fresh-squeeze juices, homemade hot chocolate and desserts. Grumpy's has won several awards over the years, including Jacksonville's "Best Overall Restaurant" by our news partners, the Florida Times-Union.

Grumpy's is also looking to expand into new locations in Mandarin, Fruit Cove, Ortega, Southside, Beaches, Amelia Island and St. Augustine, the release says.

The new restaurant is located at 155 Fountains Way, St. Johns, Florida 32259. For more information, email TheFountains@GrumpysRestaurantCo.com.

Grumpy's - Florida Governor Ron DeSantis & Franchisees Dell Hoard & Family 1.JPG

JULY 12, 2021

MIDDLEBURG, Fla. — After sharing the news of a $700,000 grant for Green Cove Springs to conduct neighborhood improvement projects, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis paid a visit to a Middleburg diner.

In photos only shared with First Coast News, DeSantis is pictured ordering food and greeting the owners and staff at Grumpy's Restaurant on Blanding Boulevard.

The Middleburg location opened its doors in October 2020 as the first franchise location to branch off from the original Orange Park location.

During the pandemic, Grumpy's founder and CEO Daniel DeLeon made headlines for donating his own salary to his staff, along with donating produce to local neighbors who could not afford groceries and launching a community action campaign to deliver meals to first responders in Orange Park.

The Middleburg location is owned and operated by lifelong Middleburg resident Dell Hoard, who said he wanted to make a difference in the local community.

Speaking from Green Cove Springs City Hall, DeSantis announced $29 million in grants for 42 small, rural communities throughout the state. The Department of Economic Opportunity's Small Cities Community Development Block Grant program will allow Green Cove Springs to complete three neighborhood revitalization projects.

Funding will go toward replacing stormwater pipe that is more than 50 years old, installing sidewalk curb, asphalt and landscaping on West Street; installing more than 1.5 miles of sidewalk on Highland Avenue and Center Street; and installing picnic tables and benches at Vera Francis Hall Park, the governor said.

JUNE 2, 2021

CLAY COUNTY – There’s a new Grumpy’s coming to town.

Voted Jacksonville’s “Best Kept Secret,” Grumpy’s Restaurant is continuing to add franchise owners to help expand the award-winning local restaurant franchise. Locations open in Orange Park and Middleburg and one coming to St. Johns and Wildlight this would be the 5th Grumpy’s in the area.

The new location anticipated for the Clay County area will be owned by local natives to Clay County, husband-and-wife duo Michael and Tracy Yarbrough. Before owning a Grumpy’s franchise Tracy was working as a Dental Hygienist for 8 years. Prior to that she was in the restaurant industry doing everything from bartending to serving and hosting private parties for a number of big name restaurant brands. Michael has 21 years of blended military and civilian experience. Michael, a disabled veteran who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, has 21 years of blended military and civilian experience, serving in US Army and Florida Army National Guard from 1998-2013.

“My husband and I were born and raised in Clay county and live in Green Cove Springs. We both graduated from Middleburg High School. We choose to help continue Grumpy’s expansion because it is a staple within our community known for its great food and customer service,” says Tracy. “Grumpy’s focuses on family and it’s really important to us that we are focusing on our family, while also helping to create happy memories in our restaurant for the people in our community.”

Founded in 1999, the original Grumpy’s was a dream of a U.S. Navy cook, known as “Chef Grumpy: The Bad Mood Dude.” After retiring, the original “Grumpy” decided to take a leap of faith and continue to serve his community in a different facet.

Grumpy’s has been voted Jacksonville’s “Best Overall Restaurant” two years in a row, “Best Breakfast”, “Best Place to Work”, and “Best Kept Secret” by the Florida Times-Union. DeLeon was also awarded “Mover & Shaker of the Year,” and and one of 29 Rising Stars by FSR. Recently, Clay Today announced Grumpy’s as the winner of 5 awards for 2021 including “Best Breakfast” “Best Brunch” and it’s Middleburg Franchise location won “Best New Business”.

Grumpy’s Restaurant was born out of passion and love for bringing family and friends together over great diner food. Their commitment and mission are to deliver the highest quality dining experience at an affordable price for families everywhere.
