Jacksonville entrepreneur earns recognition as one of the innovators who dared the impossible in 2020

March 08, 2021 // Franchising.com // JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Grumpy’s Restaurant president and CEO, Daniel DeLeon, has been recognized as one of FSR’s 29 Rising Restaurant Stars. Grumpy’s is no stranger to earning awards for its delicious food, work environment and outstanding leadership, and FSR’s award continues to prove the brand’s continued commitment to delivering the highest quality dining experience at an affordable price to families everywhere.

Dubbed the restaurant rescuer by FSR, in 2017 he purchased and turned around the floundering Grumpy’s and made it a successful franchise in 2019. Before taking the helm at Grumpy’s, DeLeon had not only owned and operated multiple restaurant franchise locations, but also grew six local businesses from the ground up. After having a successful career as a multi-unit franchisee, it’s no wonder he was able to completely transform Grumpy’s into the award-winning brand it is now.

During Covid-19, he gave up a part of his salary so that his staff can continue to bring home a paycheck, despite dining rooms being closed in the state of Florida. Daniel then, with the help of his employees, organized a produce giveaway for residents who couldn’t afford groceries. In addition, Grumpy’s gave back to frontline workers by allowing anyone to contribute and gift a meal to the workers, as well as people in need in the community and Grumpy’s matched each donation.

“Despite coronavirus shutting the doors of many restaurants, Grumpy’s has prevailed through these challenges and we are even opening new locations in the near future,” said DeLeon. “Our team showed how tough restaurants had to be to survive unprecedented times in the industry and FSR’s recognition is a huge honor for our restaurants.”

Restaurant owner earns the distinction of one of 2021’s most influential restaurant CEOs

With NRN only identifying a select few CEOs from the record number of submissions it received this year, over 500 in total, DeLeon joins exclusive company thanks to his outstanding leadership in 2020.

Earlier this year, DeLeon has also been recognized as one of FSR’s 29 Rising Restaurant Stars of 2021. One restaurant will open in St. Johns County, slated to open this Spring, and two restaurants in the Jacksonville area.

President and CEO Daniel DeLeon told News4Jax the franchise is expecting to have eight local restaurants open by the end of 2022. This news comes after the restaurant bounced back from hardship last spring facing the pandemic.

December 15, 2020 // Franchising.com // JACKSONVILLE - Grumpy’s Restaurant has been awarded the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association (FRLA) Seal of Commitment - a promise that the establishment has achieved enhanced safety and sanitation standards as designated by FRLA to ensure the safety of guests and employees. The FRLA’s goal is that guests have confidence that our business is sanitary and safe, and staff are well trained when they see an FRLA Seal of Commitment on the door.

“Ensuring that our guests feel comfortable and safe at our restaurants is, and has always been, our top priority,” said Grumpy’s Restaurant President and CEO Daniel DeLeon. “Long before the pandemic, we put many practices in place to keep our guests and staff safe, but now with health at the forefront of everyone’s minds, we are proud to display our Seal of Commitment as reminder of the promise we have made to keep our community healthy.”

The Seal of Commitment has been awarded to the founding location in Orange Park, and its new Middleburg location, which opened in October. For each restaurant to earn the Seal of Commitment, the businesses have dedicated time and invested resources to ensure the establishment, staff, and guests remain safe and healthy by completing management, food safety, and COVID-19 safety and sanitation trainings for all team members.

“FRLA is proud to designate Grumpy’s Restaurant with our Seal of Commitment for their commitment to sanitation excellence,” said Carol Dover, President and CEO of the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association. “Through this achievement, they are demonstrating their serious pledge to ensure the safety and health of their employees and guests, and we commend them.”

Grumpy’s has developed and maintained standard operating procedures with intensive safety and sanitation standards. The franchise takes pride in the fact that each restaurant has bi-monthly health and food safety inspections from a third-party inspection company. All employees are state-certified ServStaff Safe Food Handlers, FRLA COVID-19 Sanitation & Safety certified, and, as always, Grumpy’s brings in a professional cleaning crew to clean and disinfect both restaurants every evening.

All guest entrance handles and high touch areas have been wrapped with Pure Zone Antimicrobial Surface Projection Wrap Film. Every employee goes through the CDC recommended health screening and temperature check prior to each employee shift. They have even extended this to all of their vendors, delivery drivers and maintenance personnel. Frequency of their already stringent cleaning and sanitation procedures in every department of the organization have been increased.
